Weld Inspection Problems to Ultrasonic Phased Array Inspection Technology to Solve

Feb. 06, 2021

In order to make the water-cooled wall more stable during operation, flat steel is usually welded on the water-cooled wall pipe row to prevent the water-cooled wall from wear, but the weld seam between the strapping and the water-cooled wall pipe row of several units produces cracks perpendicular to the strapping, and after a period of operation, the cracks extend to the water-cooled wall, resulting in the cracking of the water-cooled wall. The reason for the cracks was that when welding was performed at this location, the site temperature was too low and the location was too special for welding heat treatment.

HS PA20-Fx Ultrasonic Flaw Detector is a high-end phased array flaw detector, which is specially developed for the high-end detection requirements of the market. The Ultrasonic Flaw Detector has 64/128 detection channels, which can detect complex structures or materials such as ultra-thick carbon steel and honeycomb plate. Matching a double crystal matrix array probe can solve the problem of thick stainless steel detection. The HS PA20-Fx Ultrasonic Flaw Detector can be equipped with two groups of TOFD detection channels, which can scan the weld with a thickness of 100 mm at one time.

Ultrasonic phased-array detection

Water-cooled wall strapping is a long steel plate with a thickness of 28 mm and a width of about 120 mm. The water-cooled wall strapping is welded to the water-cooled wall pipe row, which can play a role in fixing the water-cooled wall and preventing the water-cooled wall from wearing out. In order to make the water-cooled wall pipe row and the straps welded more firmly between the two sides of the straps and the water-cooled wall surface contact through the fusion of welding together; the welding method to form the structure of the weld is quite special, such as welding and strapping connection area is very small, the structure of the weld also varies with its location.

Water-cooled wall strapping weld detection status

Water-cooled wall straps in the welding process, due to the special location and can not complete the heat treatment work, so the location after the completion of the welding, due to the rapid cooling rate, easy to produce cracks perpendicular to the straps, the crack gradually extended to the water-cooled wall pipe, thus causing the rupture of the water-cooled wall pipe.

For the site cut off part of the water-cooled wall strapping weld appearance, you can see that the weld is located between the two pieces of water-cooled wall strapping, there is no location for ray detection, and because the crack generated by the weld has a certain depth, but also can not be magnetic particle detection; in addition, the contact surface of the weld and strapping is small, and the weld structure is complex, but also can not be conventional ultrasonic detection.

Fan-sweep end-angle area analysis method

Fan sweep end angle area analysis method is a new ultrasonic phased-array mapping analysis method proposed to complete the defect assessment, its principle is based on the reflected wave at a fixed location of the inspected weld to determine the acoustic beam coverage area, so as to determine the existence of defects in the region of the ESBeamTool software simulation effect is shown in Figure 5, the inspected weld with the position changes, the weld structure also changes, but The ultrasonic phased array acoustic wave can achieve multi-angle coverage. When the ultrasonic phased array beam coverage simulation is performed, it is found that when the ultrasonic phased array probe is kept in the same horizontal position with the weld, there will be the same or similar angle covering the structure end angle 1, structure end angle 2 and structure end angle 3.
